12、PresidentRichardNixon.TheCongressionalhearingsintothesituationknownasWatergatewerebroadcastonnationaltelevision.DuringtheWatergatehearings,MissJordandeclaredherstrongbeliefintheUnitedStatesConstitution.ShedenouncedPresidentNixonforviolatingit.Sheisrememberedstillforhercommandingpresentationatthehear
13、inganddeepknowledgeofconstitutionalissues.TheWatergatehearingsthatledtoPresidentNixonsresignationmadeBarbaraJordanknownaroundthenation.STEVEEMBER:FollowingtheWatergatehearings,BarbaraJordanwentontootherfirsts.Innineteenseventy-six,shewasaskedtospeakattheDemocraticNationalConventionwhichnominatedJimm
14、yCarter.MissJordanwasthefirstblackwomantogiveanopeningspeechattheDemocraticConvention.ShesaidmembersoftheDemocraticPartybelievethatthepeoplearethebasisofallgovernmentalpower.Democratsbelieve,shecontinued,thatthepowerofthepeopleistobeextended,notrestricted.Inherspeech,MissJordanalsourgedAmericanstowo
