4、deducationandtohaveabetterlife.WhenShirleywasthreeyearsoldherparentssentherandhersisterstolivewiththeirgrandmotherinBarbados.ShirleyreceivedagoodeducationfromtheBritishschoolsystem.Sheenjoyedtheyearsshelivedwithhergrandmother.HerfamilyinBarbadoswasastrong,organizedgroupthatbelievedineducation.Shirle

13、nizationforWomen.MizChisholmwasanactivistforpeopleofcolor,includingNativeAmericansandSpanish-speakingimmigrants.Sheoftenspokeaboutculturalandsocialissues.(SOUND)IncreasingimmigrationtotheUnitedStatessuggeststhatwedoface(-andwebetterownupto-Wedoface)newsocialandculturalproblemsasthesenewAmericansarei

14、ntegratedintooursociety.Andbecausemostofthenewimmigrantsarepeopleofcolor,culturaladjustmentsmustbemadebyallgroupsinAmericaifwearetolearntolivetogetherasonenation.VOICEONE:MizChisholmwroteabookaboutherlifeinnineteenseventycalledUnboughtandUnbossed.Sherefusedtobedefinedbypartypoliticsorracialcompariso

16、lackpersontocarryoutapresidentialcampaignwithinoneofthemajorparties.WhensheannouncedhercandidacyfortheDemocraticPartynominationforpresidentthisiswhatshesaid:IamnotthecandidateofblackAmerica,althoughIamblackandproud.Iamnotthecandidateofthewomensmovementofthiscountry,althoughIamawomanandIamequallyproudofthat.Iamnotthecandidateofanypoliticalbossesorspecialinterests.Iamthecandidateofthepeople.
