12、himthroughouttheworldbeforehedied.InNineteen-Twenty-Two,HughestookajobonashipandsailedtoAfrica.HewouldlatersailtoFrance,Russia,SpainandItaly.Hewrotepoemsandshortstoriesduringhistravels.Hisexperienceswhiletravelinggreatlyinfluencedhiswork.Hesentafewofhiswritingsbackhome.Theywerepublished,whichhelpede
13、stablishhimasaprofessionalwriter.FinancialproblemsendedHughesstravels.HetriedtofindworkonashipsohecouldreturntotheUnitedStates.ButinItaly,hehadproblemsfindingworkonashipbecausehewasblack.Inthepoem,lzToo,henotedthattheAmericancolorlineevenreachedallthewayoverthere.(READING)VOICEONE:InNineteen-Twenty-

16、odcalledtheHarlemRenaissance.IttookplaceduringtheNineteen-TwentiesandThirties.TheHarlemRenaissancewasaperiodofgreatartisticcreativityamongblackpeople.Forthefirsttime,blackartisticexpressionwasbeingwidelyrecognized.Hughesbecamefriendswithothergreatblackwritersofthetime,suchasClaudeMcKay,CounteeCullenandZoraNealHurston.TheyhopedthatgreatartcouldchangetheracistideasinAmericaaboutAfricanAmericans.
