It not only names the topic (who, what) of the paragraph, but also limits the topic to one or two areas that can be discussed completely in the space of a single paragraph. The specific area is called the controlling idea.
4、Definition and FunctionnThe controlling idea is usually indicated by a single word or a phrase in the topic sentence. A controlling idea helps a writer by reminding him or her at all times to keep to the central idea as he or she writes a paragraph. e.g.nPoint out the topic and the controlling idea
