2、sstillnouniversallyagreeduponexplanation,therearethreecompetingtheories.OnetheoryholdsthattheChacostructureswerepurelyresidential,witheachhousinghundredsofpeople.SupportersofthistheoryhaveinterpretedChacogreathousesasearlierversionsofthearchitectureseeninmorerecentSouthwestsocieties.Inparticular,the
3、Chacohousesappearstrikinglysimilartothelarge,well-knownapartmentbuildingsatTaoszNewMexico,inwhichmanypeoplehavebeenlivingforcenturies.AsecondtheorycontendsthattheChacostructureswereusedtostorefoodsupplies.OneofthemaincropsoftheChacopeoplewasgrainmaize,whichcouldbestoredforlongperiodsoftimewithoutspo
4、ilingandcouldserveasalong-lastingsupplyoffood.Thesuppliesofmaizehadtobestoredsomewhere,andthesizeofthegreathouseswouldmakethemverysuitableforthepurpose.Athirdtheoryproposesthathouseswereusedasceremonialcenters.ClosetoonehousezcalledPuebloAltozarchaeologistsidentifiedanenormousmoundformedbyapileofold
5、material.Excavationsofthemoundrevealeddepositscontainingasurprisinglylargenumberofbrokenpots.ThisfindinghasbeeninterpretedasevidencethatpeoplegatheredatPuebloAltoforspecialceremonies.Attheceremonies,theyatefestivemealsandthendiscardedthepotsinwhichthemealshadbeenpreparedorserved.Suchceremonieshavebe
