14、anticOcean.ItwascalledKillDevilHill,nearthetownofKittyHawk.Ithadtherightwindandopenspace.Bestofall,itwasprivate.VOICETWO:Innineteenhundred,theWrightbrotherstestedagliderthatcouldcarryaperson.Butneitherthefirstorsecondglidertheybuilthadtheliftingpowerneededforrealflight.WilburandOrvilledecidedthatwha
15、ttheyhadreadaboutairpressureoncurvedsurfaceswaswrong.SotheybuiltawindtunneltwometerslongintheirbicyclestoreinDayton,Ohio.Theytestedmorethantwohundreddesignsofwings.Thesetestsgavethemthecorrectinformationaboutairpressureoncurvedsurfaces.Nowitwaspossibleforthemtodesignamachinethatcouldfly.VOICEONE:The
16、Wrightbrothersbuiltathirdglider.TheytookittoKittyHawkinthesummerofnineteen-oh-two.Theymadealmostonethousandflightswiththeglider.Somecoveredmorethanonehundredeightymeters.Thisgliderprovedthattheyhadsolvedmostoftheproblemsofbalanceinflight.Bytheautumnofnineteen-oh-three,WilburandOrvillehaddesignedandbuiltanairplanepoweredbyagasolineengine.Theplanehadwingstwelvemetersacross.Itweighedaboutthreehundredfortykilograms,incl
